Dr. Kim Seong-wan elected Lifetime Member of NAE
Dr. Kim Seong-wan (62), distinguished professor of the University of Utah, Department of bioengineering and Departmemt of Pharmaceutical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, was on February 13 elected a lifetime member of the United States¡¯ National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
Kim was given this highest honor for bioengineering in recognition of his pioneering work in manmade human organs. Kim had already won recognition as a lifetime member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science in 1999 for his work in drug delivery and gene treatment. It is extremely rare for someone to be recognized by both these institutions.
Currently also an advisor to Samyang in the area of pharmaceuticals, Kim immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 after studying chemistry at Seoul National University. Since his taking doctorate in chemistry at the University of Utah, he has published some 400 articles in recognized academic journals, one of the major reasons for he is recognized as an authority in the area of biomaterials and drug delivery systems. He is also the son-in-law of the late Kim Yeon-su, founder and first chairman of Samyang.
